[Event Review] SAW: Escape Experience Review

Ever thought you would find yourself stuck in a furnace with your friends desperately trying to save you but without a clue on how to? Well neither did I until facing my claustrophobia fears within a small, dank chamber that really felt like it would cause me to combust at any moment.

SAW: Escape Experience in London has recently had a gnarly freshen up (or perhaps more like a dirty up) with more immersive rooms added, sickening set-pieces and games that will truly test your survival skills. This horror escape room game in London is perfect for friends looking for some frightful fun or for anyone that is a die-hard fan of the torture gore genre film!

For our Ghouls Magazine outing, we assembled the Gang consisting of Melissa Cox, Kat Hughes, Iona Smith and myself as we readied ourselves to come face-to-face with Jigsaw and his labyrinth of mindgames. With different routes to choose from, and the inclusion of varying terrifying scenes from the Saw film franchise, every twist and turn felt exciting. The games include gruesome designs that aren’t for the weak hearted, and whilst frantically trying to escape the rooms, there were plenty of screams and laughs to be heard. Whilst you need to work as a group, you might also be surprised to find that you need to work with other teams–even when they’re out of sight. Remember–horror films are about survival and working together, not against one another!

Here’s what the team had to say…

Melissa: “The SAW experience skilfully treads the line between horror thrills and escape room challenges. The fantastic set design immerses you in the grimy world of SAW, and there are plenty of iconic “Want to play a game?” moments and ticking clocks for fans of the franchise. But the scares are light-touch enough that non-horror fans won’t be given nightmares, and the tricky puzzles make for a fun, jam-packed experience.”

Kat: “As a massive fan of the Saw franchise, the SAW: Escape Experience had a lot to live up to. I'm happy to report that it more than lived up to expectations, with plenty of touches that will delight fans of Jigsaw and his clan of followers. The 'traps' were appropriately devilish (though a tad overwhelming for a first-time escape room player), but also, extremely fun. An experience that plays a lot like horror Crystal Maze, this is a must-play event for those with a taste for the macabre.”

Iona: “From first scare to last, SAW: Escape Experience London fully commits to the cause. With incredible set designs, very convincing scare actors, and puzzling rooms, this is an event that is well worth being terrified for. I’ll definitely be going back in the future to try out the other routes and see what other games Jigsaw has for me to play…”

And for me? I was just pleased that the furnace wasn’t real because I prefer my skin not to be charred to pieces… And after all the horrors that we went through, there was a suitably comfortable bar which made all my horror-bar dreams come true. Hanging after hours with Billy the Puppet is every horror girl’s fantasy come true.

Want to play a game? You can grab your SAW: Escape Experience tickets, starting from just £39pp. The horror escape game is Tuesday - Sunday, and even horror villains need a break so it’s closed on Mondays. The experience lasts about 70 minutes in total and you should be prepared to get a little scared! Situated in Tower Hill, London, UK.
