[Editorial] Films To Ruin Your Day: Submission & Abuse
It’s that time of the week again where I give you a long list of films that are going to absolutely ruin your day, and potentially have the chance of destroying the rest of your week too. Okay I know - some of you are totally not even going to go near these films but you’re all like kittens, with curiosity getting the better of you. Even if you don’t watch them, I promise you that just simply searching them could fuck the rest of your day.
So, are you brave enough to dive into a little bit of fetish, a good amount of feeding and some nasty low level human shit? Let’s hold hands and do it together…
(Edit: I just want to apologise in advance of this list. Once I got to the end of writing I realised just how tough these films are to watch and that they all need some serious trigger warnings. There’s a lot of physical and sexual abuse, controlling and demeaning relationships in here, so it’s worth being careful with this)
The Bunny Game (2011)
It really doesn’t matter how much director Adam Rehmeir tells people this one was consensual, they still kick off about it on behalf of actress Rodleen Getsic and project their distress onto her. But funnily enough, The Bunny Game was born out of Getsic’s trauma from really living through a kidnapping.
This one is pretty triggering as it is essentially just under 80 minutes of watching a sex worker get physically and sexually abused, which isn’t nice to watch. But knowing this film was a cathartic process for Getsic entirely changes the narrative of it, and brings something even more disturbing in ways, but reassuring in others.
Deadgirl (2008)
We do love watching a bit of necrophilia don’t we? Okay, maybe that’s just me. But I prefer mine with a little romance at least, which Deadgirl certainly does not provide. This 2008 film from Marcel Sarmiento follows a couple of horny teenage boys who find a dead girl abandoned in a mental asylum and decide they’re just going to use her as a sex doll.
Why the internet says this is a black comedy zombie film is beyond me - yes, she’s not fully dead but fuck, that makes the film even worse and it’s basically a lengthy rape film. The teenage boys fetish for a submissive girl is fucked up, and honestly watching this left me feeling dirty so I beg you now, do not expect a quirky zombie movie, because this is not.
Feed (2005)
Looking for a way to encourage yourself to go on a diet? Just watch Feed from 2005 and you’ll probably have a six pack in a matter of weeks. No, but seriously this Australian horror film is pretty damn triggering in many ways and probably not suitable for anyone with an eating disorder because it doesn’t tread lightly on issues regarding consumption and weight.
This one looks at women who are force-fed by men on camera to help other people jerk off at home. It probably sounds a bit tame in comparison, but the forceful submissive relationships and control aspects are really quite tough to watch and it’s a stark reminder that relationships with this kind of abuse are happening every day. Caution warning for this one.
The Girl Next Door (2007)
Not sure if I should suggest the film here or the book, but both are pretty gnarly… Here’s a fun fact: There’s also a 2004 film of the same name starring Elisha Cuthbert and Emile Hirsch (which is a fav comedy of mine), which I decided to show to my mum. Unfortunately we ended up watching Gregory Wilson’s 2007 one which shows a girl getting raped and tortured in her basement by the neighbourhood boys… Safe to say my mum was pretty damn shocked by my choice of film.
Adapted from Jack Kethum’s book by the same name (also known as Evil), this one really gets under your skin. There is a scene with a blowtorch and a vagina… And that’s not even the worst of it. The sheer volume of sustained abuse towards one young girl makes this really, really hard to watch but it also looks at peer pressure and the trust youngsters put in adults, which is often abused.
Hate Crime (2005)
I’ve put this one on the list, but it’s more of an anti-suggestion more than anything because I really fucking hated this film with everything I have, but this is how the column goes. Extreme found footage is my bag but this one certainly felt extremely gratuitous from about five minutes in - this resulted in me and my friends turning it off the first time we saw it, we just couldn’t watch this together. I have gone back and revisited it since...
James Cullen Bressack’s 2013 film Hate Crime sees a trio of neo-nazis break into a Jewish families home and rape, torture and murder them. The rape of the mother at the beginning of the film felt so aggravated and never-ending that I really, really struggled with this one. Then there’s forced incest, and on top of all that you have these atrocious slurs and hate speech… But Bressack is Jewish himself and said it’s his fears personified, which makes it feel like at least there was some purpose behind this one? I’ll let you be the judge.
I can sometimes go months without having a panic attack. Unfortunately, this means that when they do happen, they often feel like they come out of nowhere. They can come on so fast and hard it’s like being hit by a bus, my breath escapes my body, and I can’t get it back.
