[Editorial] Five Films About Necrophilia That You May Love To Death

Necrophilia, aka, the sexual attraction towards dead bodies, or a sexual act involving dead bodies is probably one of the biggest taboos not only in real life, but as a theme within the horror genre as well. It’s a theme which has been banished to the realm of extreme horror, so don’t expect to see it in the next James Wan blockbuster.

Your initial reaction to hearing about a movie that involves necrophilia may be total disgust...but don’t be too surprised if your interest begins to peak. Just like the psychology behind serial killers, anything that involves a paraphilia or an act so disgustingly unbelievable will spark some curiosity.

So, if you’re looking to satisfy your inquisitive and morbid little mind, here is a list of films that involve necrophilia.

1. NEKROmantik 1987

Directed by Jörg Buttgereit 

You cannot have a list of necrophilia films without kicking it off with the classic that is NEKROmantik. It’s reputation is infamous in cult circles and is still banned to this day in countries such as Iceland, Norway, Malaysia and in some provinces in Canada. It follows the story of Rob Schmadtke who works for a company who cleans up bodies and car crashes. This allows Rob and his partner Betty to appease their necrophiliac desires. After bringing home the nearly skeletal remains of a murder victim, the couple begin a relationship with their new house guest, and thus bringing about complications that any relationship may be plagued with. NEKROmantik has all the beauty of an art house film, touching on the psychological and physiological connections between love, sex and death. It’s soundtrack is stunning and somehow manages to make the act of necrophilia a romantic one. The film also contains enough gore and “yuck out loud” moments to satiate any hardcore extreme fans, making it a must see within the horror genre as a whole. 

2. NEKROmantik 2 1991

Directed By Jörg Buttgereit

Following on from the original NEKROmantik, is the second installment by Jörg Buttgereit, NEKROmantik2: Return of the Loving Dead. It takes off where the first film left off, with Rob being excavated from his grave by fellow necrophiliac Monika. The sequel sees Monika struggle between her sexual urges for the dead and the desire for a normal, very much alive, relationship. NEKROmantik 2 is every bit as controversial as the first, it was confiscated by Munich police twelve days after it’s release. As well as the continuing themes of love, death and romance, the film also touches on German political themes such as the country’s Nazi past and it’s division of East and West.

3. TetroManiac: eROTik 2019

Directed By Domiziano Cristopharo

The TetroVideo release TetroManiac: eROTik , is inspired by the true crimes of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, as well as being a love story to Jörg Buttgereit’s NEKROmantik films. Adam Western plays “Dahmer”, a man with Egyptian occultist tendencies, who refrigerates other men’s body parts and keeps a rotting corpse as his bed fellow. However, as this necrophile finds out, there are dire consequences for his actions. This feature is chock full of decomposing necrotic gore, yet paired with its dream-like soundtrack, is a full on surrealist experience. The act of necrophilia is on full display here, as well as some serious gnarly body horror, and blended with the subtexts of the queer experience makes for an intriguing take on the taboo subject.

4. Contracted 2013

Directed by Eric England

After being raped at a party by a morgue technician with an Abaddon tattoo (Abaddon is an archangel of the abyss from the Book of Revelations) who enjoys his job a little too much, Samantha begins to go through some serious bodily transformations. Contracted combines a few horror subgenres and, whilst not being too visceral when it comes to the subject of necrophilia, is extremely graphic in other ways. With body parts slowly decaying and bugs falling out of orifices, this is not a movie for the gore-sensitive. The pace is frantic, and has viewers feeling like they’re along for the desperate and confused ride of the main character.

5. Love Me Deadly 1972

Directed by Jacques Lacerte

If you prefer your cinematic necrophilia with some vintage vibes, then look no further than 1972’s Love Me Deadly. Directed by Jacques Lacerte, this retro take on the frowned on sexual act, follows a Los Angeles heiress being initiated into a necrophilic cult, run by the local diener in his mortuary. Lindsay must learn to navigate being newly wed with her penchant for the newly deceased. Love Me Deadly hits all the right notes when it comes to seventies horror perfection. It’s blend of whimsical pop music, groovy fashion and depictions of satanic cult rituals makes it the perfect feature for those looking to dabble with necrophilia in horror without taking it to the extreme.
